United Nations extended assistance to Mozambique for the rehabilitation of displaced people in the Northern region of the southern African country. An agreement towards this was signed by the Mozambique government and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The funding is a part of the three-year US$700-million project , which will be funded by the UN to help provide humanitarian services to the displaced people in the southern African country.
Gas-rich Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique has been battered by a bloody jihadist insurgency since 2017. Several economic activities including work at the much touted Total gas project has been stalled as reported by www.trendnafrica.com a few days ago. The project said to be a game changer for the country is caught up in turbulence let loose by the jihadists.
The violence has had a heavy toll on human lives and properties. At least 2,800 people lost their lives and several thousands got dislocated. President Filipe Nyusi, attended the signing ceremony of the agreement between the UN and Mozambique government , which took place in Pemba, the provincial capital.
The UN project aims to provide social services along with agricultural aid and infrastructure support such as schools and mobile hospitals in the affected areas. Analysts say a lot of effort and persuasion is needed to end the huge problem cast by the Jihadists, which will act as a drag on the development effort of Mozambique.
