UN chief Antonio Guterres asked for the opening of humanitarian corridors to assist civilians caught in fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, since the fighting groups had so far rejected attempts at mediation. Expressing grave concerns about what is happening in Ethiopia, the UN Secretary General warned of a dramatic humanitarian impact in Ethiopia including neighboring Sudan.
The UN chief called for full respect of international humanitarian laws, and also for the opening of humanitarian corridors to allow aid to be delivered in the areas of conflict. The Ethiopian government forces continued their push into Tigray, positioning themselves at the strategic towns of Axum and Adwa, according to a government statement on Friday.
The African Union (AU) named Joaquim Chissano, former president of Mozambique; Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, former president of Liberia; and Kgalema Motlanthe, former president of South Africa, as its envoys on the conflict to sort out the matter amicably among the warring groups. They will be travelling to Addis Ababa shortly.
