Zelenskyy also noted that the minerals deal, which was on Friday’s meeting’s agenda before the chaos erupted, will be the first step towards peace but conveyed that it should be linked to ensuring lasting peace to the country-ravaged three-year war.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly demanded security guarantees just hours after a public spat with his US counterpart, Donald Trump. He said that Ukraine and Russia have been waging war for three years, and the President of Ukraine, on behalf of the people of the country, wanted to hear that the US was on its side and would stay with it. He added that a ceasefire without a security guarantee was meaningless.

Experts interpret the Ukrainian president’s statement during a media interview as aimed at setting the narrative right after Trump’s assertion that Kyiv was not serious about the settlement.  Nobody wants to finish (the war) more than the Ukraine, he said.  It was a battle for full freedom and peaceful living. He urged the US and President Trump to be on the same side since it was a battle for freedom and lives.

Diplomatic analysts are divided on the issue and continuation of the war. While a section holds the war, Ukraine will not be able to hold on to war long without tacit support from the US, others feel that some assurances would come from the EU countries to Zelenskyy or at least they will try to impress upon Trump to relax the stiff stand he had taken.
