The UK government has announced its decision to withdraw its military contingent in Mali deployed as part of the UN mission to the country. The reason for the withdrawal stated is the ruling junta’s use of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner.

The UN had deployed a peacekeeping mission in Mali since 2013 to stabilise the security situation in Mali which was plagued by jihadist attacks. British soldiers were part of the mission.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, though the commitment of military support was for three years, faced with the growing instability, the UK government has decided to plan the withdrawal of its troops from Mali in the next six months.
