UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has revealed that the British Government increased fees for Migrants’ Visa Applications and National Health Services to Support Public Sector Pay Rise. The immigration health surcharge will be an additional disincentive to curb reportedly rampant migration into the country. The Government expects substantial resources would be generated through these additional levies to offset the outgo of resources by way of an increased pay rise to public sector employees.

While addressing a press conference recently, the Prime Minister said that an increase in immigration fees would be introduced first and would be levied when migrants apply for visas. There will also be a surcharge levied on health services on migrants when they access the National Health Service (NHS). The adjustments to these fees are expected to generate over a billion pounds in revenue.

Sunak called upon unions to suspend ongoing and planned industrial actions, since, according to him, a fair deal had been reached for workers. The proposed deal entails pay increases for various sectors. Police officers are set to receive a 7% rise in the 2023-24 period, while teachers, senior NHS staff, and junior doctors will experience pay hikes of 6.5%, 6%, and 6% respectively, along with additional one-off payments. Armed forces personnel will see a 5% increase in their salaries, also accompanied by a one-off payment.

The country’s current inflation rate stands at 8.7%, surpassing the Bank of England’s 2% target. The Prime Minister emphasized the finality of the offer in view of the high inflation being faced by the country, alluding that this could be the best offer from the Government in the most challenging times.  Analysts say that the British economy is facing severe problems in almost all sectors due to the impact of the Ukraine war, Brexit, and a rising cost-of-living crisis.
