The scope of the current UK-Rwanda Migration and Economic Development Partnership is poised to expand after the signing of an addendum during the just concluded visit of the home secretary of the UK Suella Braverman to Kigali. The addendum was signed by Suella Braverman and Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Biruta, on March 18. At a press briefing in Kigali, announcing the development, Braverman said that it will increase the provision of support to people being relocated to Rwanda.

Rwanda and the UK signed a Migration and economic development Partnership in April 2022. The objective of the deal is to relocate illegal migrants from the UK to Rwanda where they will be empowered through several programs. The UK recorded a 60 percent increase in the arrival of migrants in 2022 compared to the previous year. The country received 45,000 migrants in 2022.

The UK Home Secretary hoped that the partnership between UK and Rwanda would pave the way for evolving a humanitarian and compassionate solution for the global migration crisis.

Braverman, who visited two regional tech hubs based in and around Kigali expressed satisfaction with the facilities to impart skills and the welfare program for the resettlement and integration of migrants coming from the UK to Rwanda.

Under the UK-Rwanda migration deal, migrants have the option of applying for asylum and resettling in Rwanda or returning to their home countries after receiving support through the program. The £120 million UK-funded program will fund opportunities for the migrants as well as Rwandans.
