The UK government feels that the refugees, who are entering the country to be deported to Rwanda would have a safe and secure life. This was stated by UK’s Home Office minister Suella Braverman, while on a tour to Rwanda. She visited a housing estate being built in Kigali for the refugees, who will be deported once the legal tangles are cleared.

Kigali lies some 6500 kilometers away from the UK. Though the settlement was ready last year, deportation has not taken place so far. The new project is a step taken by the UK to handle the perilous problem of the increasing refugee problem that is worrying the country because of its economic, political, and cultural fallouts.  However, there are many grey areas in the proposed shelter scheme in a third country. Experts point out that even bona fide refugees would not be accepted into the UK upon arrival in boats crossing the dangerous and rough seas in small boats, which do not have safety and basic facilities. In recent times, a number of deaths have taken place while the ill-equipped boats were crossing the sea.

The UK authorities and the host country Rwanda believe that the migrants and natives can be integrated without much difficulty. That is being disputed by some non-government organizations. Division of societies based on tribal loyalties is common in Africa. Based on that, they suspect an easy integration would not be possible for people coming from different environments and cultural backgrounds. Also, they point out that Rwanda does not have a clean track record of accommodation as evidenced in the past. The genocide that has taken place in 1994, which took the lives of multitudes of people was purely based on tribal loyalties and internecine friction.

Back in the country, the opponent -Labour Party – did not take kindly to the assertions of Suella Braverman. It accused her visit of a PR effort and purely for getting a photo opportunity. The party maintained that the government should have used Euro 150 million given to Rwanda to compensate for the land that should have been used for hunting down criminal gangs that are involved in human trafficking.
