In a recent interview to the local media, British Ambassador to Zimbabwe Melanie Robinson assured that United Kingdom will continue its support to Zimbabwe during the coronavirus outbreak period.

She said that the UK recently announced nearly USD$44 million assistance to Zimbabwe which makes it the biggest contributor to fight COVID-19 as part of strengthening existing relations between the two governments. The gesture is a testimony to the importance attached to the strengthening of the bilateral ties between both the countries. The UK assistance will be utilised primarily to reduce the spread of the virus, improve water and sanitation, broadcast messages and tracking the disease, Robinson said.

Zimbabwe has been struggling for funds to fight the Coronavirus. Its already weak health infrastructure came under severe stress to cope with the deadly virus. Frontline workers became affected as they lacked personal protective equipment. Robinson said that UK aid will also be utilised for purchasing supplies to help the workers as well as the most vulnerable members in both urban and rural communities.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa had revealed that his government was overwhelmed by the virus with funding a big challenge. The government recently extended the initial 21-day lockdown by a further 14 days.
