Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni advised African countries that
share the River Nile to tap also water resources of the River Congo,
as a way of ease tensions surrounding sharing Nile waters. Egypt,
Sudan and Ethiopia are currently involved in a dispute, which can be
dated back to some 20 years ago. Still the stalemate is continuing
without any immediate solution in sight.
Museveni, who was addressing delegates at the 20th African Water
Association (AFWA) International Congress held in Uganda’s capital,
Kampala said that one of the pre-conditions for sharing Congo’s water
resources should be tyo ensure peace to be restored in the Democratic
Republic of Congo.
The water of the Nile is 85 billion cubic metres per year, while
Congo has 3,000 billion Cubic metres of water every year. Without
realizing the huge water potential in DRC, disputants to the waters of
the Nile are harping animosity and spreading hatred, which may not
bode well for the development of the African region. A little realized
fact, the Ugandan strong man said is that the River Nile starts its
4,000km-journey to the Mediterranean Sea from Uganda, and its basin is
shared by nine countries including Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic
Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Egypt.
