Ugandan Government needs 137,000 television sets to facilitate distance learning

· Ugandan government will have to purchase over 137,000 television sets if they have to facilitate distance learning as proposed by President Museveni.

In a televised address to the nation, the Ugandan President Mr Museveni conveyed the decision to postpone the partial reopening of schools for another one month. However, he underlined that studying will have to continue through distance learning programme on televisions and radios. Ugandan government will have to purchase over 137,000 television sets if they have to facilitate distance learning as proposed by President Museveni.

Among the number of proposals to facilitate the programme includes provision of two television sets to each village and a radio set to each home. According to statistics published by the electoral commission, Uganda has a total of 68,733 villages.

COVID 19 has impacted some of its prime economic sectors including tourism and exports of key crops including coffee, fish, and horticulture products.

According to Mr Jean Byamugisha, the chief executive officer of the Uganda Hotel Owners Association, the industry will lose about $900 million to the pandemic and the resultant lockdown. Tourism and hospitality sectors have reported a loss of about 450,000 jobs. Some of the other economic sectors such as manufacturing, construction, trade, transport and services are also suffering from the economic slowdown.
