Ms Rebecca Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister has recently stated that it has been observed that Ugandan goods are trading more outside EAC, than within the regional bloc. Out of the total exports of $507.4m, Uganda’s exports to East Africa is only $102.9m.
The observation has prompted the government to seek special measures on non-tariff barriers that prevent the country’s goods from trading in EAC. She informed that EAC regional cooperation ministers are scheduled to meet next month to decide on sanctions against member states blocking intra-regional trade. Already measures are on to
to identify non-tariff barriers preventing Ugandan goods from trading within the EAC.
It was noted that Uganda exports more goods to Asia, Europe, and Comesa. At the same time, Uganda imports significant quantities of goods from the EAC members.
Uganda has made major inroads into new trading destinations in Southern Africa. Malawi has started importing medical supplies from Uganda, and Zambia now imports processed milk from Uganda.
