In a landmark infrastructure declaration, President Yoweri Museveni has announced that the government will construct a new international airport at Nyakisharara in Mbarara District. The project, which will be undertaken in collaboration with Chinese and Brazilian partners, is envisioned to mirror the scale, design, and operational standards of Entebbe International Airport.
President Museveni emphasized that the proposed airport will dramatically streamline international travel. By offering more direct global flight paths, the facility is expected to reduce travel times on select routes by up to 15 hours, making Uganda a more efficient gateway for international transit.
This ambitious development is part of a broader strategy to transform Mbarara and its surrounding areas into a major center of commerce, tourism, modern agriculture, and economic activity. Government officials note that the airport will attract new investments, generate employment opportunities, and enhance regional and international connectivity.
To complement the airport, the government is also preparing to upgrade key road networks within Mbarara District. These improvements will ensure efficient access to the airport site and strengthen the district’s capacity for trade, logistics, and the movement of goods and people.
