Uganda –Tanzania MOU to remove non-tariff barriers

· The fourth session of the Joint Permanent Commission between Uganda and the Republic of Tanzania in Kampala has witnessed the signing of several Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.

· The MOUs are expected to ease trade by removing non-tariff barriers and boosting bilateral cooperation.

The fourth session of the Joint Permanent Commission between Uganda and the Republic of Tanzania in Kampala has witnessed the signing of several Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. The MOUs are expected to ease trade by removing non-tariff barriers and boosting bilateral cooperation.

The Tanzanian delegation was led by their Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Amb Liberata Mulamula while Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Gen Jeje Odongo led the Ugandan team.

The two sides had agreed to appoint focal points for all ministries, departments and agencies from both sides to coordinate and follow up on issues to ensure quick implementation. Experts will be appointed to identify new areas of engagement to further promote the existing cooperation between the countries.

Uganda’s Foreign Minister appreciated the progress made by the United Republic of Tanzania on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Morogoro to reach Mwanza which will enhance connectivity and cut down transport costs.

On the defense side, an MoU was signed by the Ministers of Defence of Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania in 2020, for the security of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Project. Both sides acknowledged the immense opportunities offered by the project for both countries in terms of Foreign Direct Investment, employment; business as well as infrastructure development.
