General elections are scheduled to be held in Uganda on 14 January 2021 to elect the President and Parliament. President Yoweri Museveni who has ruled the country since 1986 for 34 years is seeking re-election. Other than him, there are ten candidates in the fray.

Musevni’s main contestants are Bobi Wine from National Unity Platform (NUP) and Patrick Oboi Amuriat from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) — the biggest opposition party in the country.

38 years old, Bobi Wine is one of the top challengers of the incumbent.  Currently, he is the MP for Kyadondo East. He amassed wealth and fans all over the world through his music. Gradually through his music, he took up corruption, social injustice, election violence, and several common man’s struggles. His Afrobeat on love, resilience sanitation and personal hygiene, drug abuse among others, had made him immensely popular since his university days. In his election speeches, he points out that he is not a politician, but a leader and was forced to enter elections as the political leaders failed miserably to change the fortunes of Uganda’s common man. In the process, he faced political persecution by the ruling government

The victory for opposition candidates whom he backed, his arrest and torture after he decided to run for president has been his legacy..

At. Earlier this year, the People Power pressure group morphed into NUP when Bobi Wine took leadership of the party and is now running for presidency under its flag.

The Forum for Democratic Change president Patrick Oboi Amuriat is the other rival for Musevni. The party is still a political force in Uganda  with strong grass root structures capable of winning local council and parliamentary seats with a good shot at the presidency.
