Soon after the conclusion of the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington, D.C last month, the US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is visiting Senegal, Zambia and South Africa from January 17 to January 28.
The objective of the visit of Yellen to Africa according to the Press release by the US government is to strengthen U.S.-Africa economic ties, by enhancing trade and investment flows and sustainable and inclusive economic growth. President Biden had announced over $15 billion in two-way trade and investment commitments, deals, and partnerships during the U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit held last month. The statement said that the proposed strategy includes funding high-quality infrastructure investments through the Partnership for Global Infrastructure Investment, preventing and preparing for future pandemics through the new Pandemic Fund, strengthening democracies and institutions against corruption, and supporting Africa to address debt vulnerabilities.
The visit also includes addressing the challenges of climate change in Africa. This includes expediting clean energy access, supporting African countries to adapt to a changing climate, and helping just energy transition.

She will underline the significance of providing greater economic opportunity for communities and businesses, evolving the multilateral development banks to better address global challenges like climate change, health and pandemics, conflict, poverty, and so on. The discussions will also cover the repercussions of the ongoing Ukraine war, the US assistance to boost food security in the continent, the implementation of the U.S. – Africa Strategic Partnership on Food Security launched at the African Leaders Summit and evolving an Action Plan to Address Food Insecurity and new support to the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program.
