The U.S. maintains that true autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable resolution for the Western Sahara dispute, according to State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce. In a statement, she emphasised that negotiations should proceed based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal.
This stance was reiterated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, reaffirming the Trump administration’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the region.
Rubio described Morocco’s 2007 proposal as “serious, credible, and realistic,” urging immediate discussions without delay. The long-standing conflict involves Morocco, which claims the territory as its own, against Algeria and the Polisario Front, which it supports.
