More than two million children stand to benefit from COVID-19 Vaccination with the commencing of vaccination of children aged between five and 11 years in Rwanda.

The administration of the vaccine started on September 20. Dr. Tharcisse Mpunga, the state minister in charge of Primary Healthcare, revealed that the pediatric formulation of the Pfizer vaccine (10 micrograms/dose), approved by different regulatory bodies including Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority is being administered on children. The dosage is also approved by the World Health Organisation for emergency use. The injection is administered in two doses at four to eight-week intervals between both doses. In a video announcing the roll out, Mpunga explained that the rationale behind the move is to protect the wider society from further pandemic impacts by closing the immunity gaps in the population.

Rwanda reported a low rate of COVID infections among children. According to the statistics from Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), as of September 18, children aged 5 to 11 years represented only 3.3% of total cases reported. The Vaccination will be mostly done at schools.
