Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with his counterpart in Togo yesterday (Tuesday) as part of his three-leg Africa trip. Erdogan and Togo’s president Faure Gnassingbe met in Lome for discussions. Earlier, the Turkish president met with Angolan President João Lourenço on Monday in Luanda. Erdogan will be visiting Nigeria as the last leg of his visits to Africa.
During the visit, a number of high – level discussions had taken place between different delegations from each country. A number of agreements have also been signed between the two countries. One important agreement was the financing of the industrial platform of AdA located at the northern exit of Lomé. Of late, there has been steady exchange of delegations between the two countries. A number of ministers from Togo were visiting Ankara.
In less than a year, several Togolese ministers, including Foreign Affairs, Security and the Armed Forces had visited Ankara. Turkey does not have much bilateral trade with Africa. It accounts for less than 10% of its total trade turnover, whereas the trade with Europe is over 56% and with Asia 26%. Of late, the two-way trade with Africa is picking up. Since 2003, the two-way trade with Africa has increased five – fold, from US$ 5 billion to US$ 25 billion. Turkish investments in Africa have also increased amounting to 6.5 billion dollars according to official figures.
The Presidents of Burkina Faso, Roch-Marc Christian Kaboré, and Liberia, George Weah, also visited the Togolese capital on Tuesday and held discussions with President Gnassingbe.
