Turkey hosted the initial round of technical negotiations between Somalia and Ethiopia, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry. These talks represent a significant step towards implementing the Ankara Declaration, which was adopted on December 11, 2024. Talks held in Ankara on Tuesday and overseen by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, the meeting included delegations led by Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos and Somali State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar.

The Ankara Declaration was facilitated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, following discussions between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. It outlines a vision for enhancing regional stability and economic collaboration amid existing tensions between the two countries.

During the negotiations, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the declaration’s principles, highlighting the importance of constructive dialogue and cooperation. The discussions aimed to transform this vision into actionable steps that would benefit both nations and support long-term regional development.

As the first round concluded, both parties expressed their commitment to establishing a foundation for sustainable, mutually beneficial growth, as stated by the ministry. This marked a crucial starting point for tackling economic and political challenges while strengthening diplomatic relations between Somalia and Ethiopia.
