The speaker of Tunisia’s parliament Rached Ghannouchi called for peaceful struggle against a return to “absolute one-man rule and described the situation in the North African country orchestrated by its President Kais Saied as a retrograde step.
Urging people to shun violence, the speaker exhorted the citizens that the Tunisian people were against violence and urged political parties and civil society to fight to recover their constitution and their democracy in a peaceful and non-violent manner.
The statement of the speaker is coming at a time when Kais Saied announced plans to draft a new electoral code and appoint a transitional leadership overlooking the fragile situation of the young democracy in the country.
In the meantime, the incumbent president, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com, is marshaling support for his move to amend the constitution, allegedly for clinging on to power. Political analysts feel that the turmoil may continue for some more time in the country. The assurances given by the president to appoint a new prime minister has not happened do far. The version of the president is that he was not against constitution, but wanted that (constitution) to reflect the aspirations of the Algerians.
