Tunisia is facing an unprecedented rise in COVID cases, the highest in the region. A spokesperson from the health ministry admitted that Tunisia’s health system “has collapsed” due to the surge in coronavirus cases.

The number of deaths has crossed 15000 in Tunisia, recording the highest of the five countries that make up the Maghreb -Mauritania, Algeria, Libya, Morocco-region. According to Analysts, the factors responsible for this plight include, a limited vaccination campaign which is dependent on deliveries, less than 5% received the two doses, little respect for barrier measures, and an unequal health system according to the regions.

The country imposed Coronavirus prevention measures to curb the spread of the virus. These included an 8 pm to 5 am nationwide curfew, postponement or cancellation of public events, tightening of health protocols and travel curbs that took effect on June 30.

The measures have dealt a severe blow to Tunisia’s tourism industry, the backbone of its economy. The tourism sector of the country employs 10% of the active population and accounts for a significant share of its annual GDP.
