Tunisian tourism to get a boost

· According to Tunisian Tourism Minister Habib Ammar, the income from the tourism sector has contracted by 62% so also the number of touristic nights by 80.5%

Tunisia is taking a number of steps to restore buoyancy in the tourism sector to can limit the devastating effect of restrictions imposed in the aftermath of the of the pandemic Covid-19. He said that the country would be taking all possible steps to boost the tourism sector.

Amongst the various steps being contemplated include promotion of desert tourism, keeping all precautions suggested by the World Health Organization intact. Tourism accounts for about 8 percent of Tunisia’s national output. The sector is also the largest employment provider. Around 400,000 people are employed in the industry.

With the re-opening of its air, land and sea, the North African country is expecting a surge in the number of tourists from other countries as the number of people afflicted by the Covid-19 has considerably declined. To facilitate international tourists, Tunisia has implemented a new entry procedure: a color coded procedure wherein certain countries are allowed to enter without restrictions and, countries that have to take enhanced precautions for entry. For instance, countries like Australia, Antigua and some African countries where the incidence of Covid-19 has been less are put in the green category; thereby the visitors from these countries do not have any entry restrictions. The visitors from Orange colored countries like Canada, Angola etc have to take enhanced precautions
