With the dissolution of the Supreme Judicial Council, the independence of the judiciary is also under threat. Saied has been clashing with the judiciary for months, for delay in issuing rulings in various cases of alleged corruption and terrorism. Through the latest move of the suspension of the council, Saied has tightened his grip on power.
Making the announcement, he stated that a temporary decree will be issued to the council. The details about the decree has not been disclosed. The Supreme Judicial Council is regarded as an independent and constitutional institution, formed in 2016. All financial privileges for council members were revoked last month.
Demonstrators both supporting and opposing Said have flooded the streets of Tunisia .Saied has started an online public consultation on a new constitution that he claimed will be put to a referendum in July.
