Addressing supporters in Sidi Bouzid, Tunisian President Kais Saied stated that he had instituted transitional governing rules and proposes to introduce a new electoral law. The statement came eight weeks after he seized executive power. He did not divulge any details on the transitional governing rules or the new electoral law.
On July 25, he dismissed the prime minister, suspended parliament and assumed all governing powers. He has not yet named a new premier or declared a roadmap for the future, raising apprehensions about his intentions. A series of arrests and travel bans have deepened the fears for the rights won in the 2011 uprising.
Habib Khedher, of Islamist Ennahda, the biggest party in parliament, commented on Facebook that implementing transitional rules was equivalent to suspending the constitution. There have been recent reports that Saied was planning to suspend the constitution and offer a new version to a referendum.
