Tunisian political crisis escalates

Massive rallies are taking place in the capital of Tunisia, Tunis with people demanding an end to the one man rule of their president Kais Saied. Thousands of people are flooding the streets demanding democracy. The demonstrations and protests are organised under the banner “Citizens Against the Coup” by Ennahdha Party. The party has a predominant presence in Tunisia’s post-revolution politics. The escalating political crisis during the last almost eight months has deepened the economic crisis, affecting the finances and daily life.

President Kais Saied who became the elected President in 2019 seized full powers by dismissing his prime minister and suspending the parliament in July last year. Despite several demonstrations by his opponents and public outcry, he continues to wield power.
