In Tunisia, a former leading lawyer and a member of parliament Bouchra Belhadj Hmida criticized the political reforms desired by president Kais Saied.
The comments by Bouchra Belhadj Hmida, coming on the eve of the launch of a public consultation on the reforms, are significant. It may be recalled that last July, Kais Saied suspended parliament and grabbed executive powers, which has been condemned by several political parties in Tunisia and the international community. The argument put forward by the president’s office was that suspension of parliament was to ensure a corruption free and people centric government.
In a hard hitting statement, the former lawyer and Member of Parliament said that there was only one institution and one person who decided the future of this country and the future of the new generations. She added that the country has not seen anything of this sort earlier playing havoc on peoples’ freedom. She also denounced the reforms and accused the president of fostering divisions amongst Tunisians to stay in power.
Dealing further on the imminent danger that was staring, Bouchra Belhadj Hmida said that the country was in an unconstitutional situation and uncertainty was writ large, without being specific about what that danger was. The popular consultation, as promised by the president, is scheduled to start on Monday.
