Tunisian authorities have rescued two groups of up to 100 migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean. The migrants managed to seek refuge in an oil platform, located around 120 km off the Coast of Tunisia. Before reaching the oil platform, they were drifting in a wooden boat.
The migrants were rescued by a French vessel, the Louise Michel, and handedthem over to Tunisia’s National Guard. The UN refugee agency said that more than 115,000 people arrived by sea in Italy, Greece, Spain, Cyprus and Malta last year. Around 1,800 lost their lives or were missing.
The UN and European Union are trying to find a lasting solution to the illegal migration by creating enough employment opportunities in the African countries, particularly in the North African region, from where most of the migration is taking place.
