Tunisia Urged to Capitalize on Olive Oil and Tourism Growth to Drive Economic Recovery

(3 Minutes Read)

In a recent publication focused on two of Tunisia’s most promising economic sectors — olive oil production and tourism — the Arab Institute of Business Leaders (Institut Arabe des Chefs d’Entreprise, IACE) underscored the critical need to harness the full potential of these industries to support national economic recovery.

The IACE report stressed that olive oil and tourism represent strategic pillars for Tunisia’s economic development, and called for swift action to implement reforms and adjust regulations. These changes, it argued, are essential to unlocking further growth, attracting investment, and reinforcing Tunisia’s financial stability. Specifically, enhanced performance in these sectors could significantly boost foreign currency reserves, help narrow the country’s trade deficit, and provide much-needed job opportunities.

Using the latest data, the report noted that global olive oil production patterns are shifting. While major producers like the European Union and Turkey are facing declines, Tunisia and Spain are on track for strong harvests. Tunisia, which already contributes approximately 10% of global olive oil output, is anticipating a further increase in production during the upcoming season — a trend that positions the country to gain a larger share in the international market.

Turning to tourism, the IACE highlighted its continued importance as a growth engine for Tunisia’s economy. Following a robust recovery from previous downturns, the tourism sector is projected to attract 11 million visitors in the 2025 season, up from 10.3 million in 2023. This rise in tourist numbers is expected to generate roughly 7.8 billion Tunisian dinars in revenue, marking tourism as a vital source of foreign exchange and economic dynamism.

The IACE concluded by urging both public and private stakeholders to act swiftly in capitalizing on these favorable conditions. By addressing structural challenges and fostering a more competitive and investor-friendly environment, Tunisia could solidify its position as a regional leader in both the olive oil and tourism industries.
