Tunisia’s Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Soufiane Tekaya, officially announced a significant initiative aimed at transforming the city of El Kef into a major tourist destination. Speaking during the launch of the 35th annual “Mou” Festival, Tekaya unveiled plans to create a new tourist zone in El Kef, encompassing a 30-hectare area.

As part of this initiative, a special commission will be established to guide the implementation of an integrated tourism development program. This body will be responsible for designing a comprehensive strategy that includes the construction of hotels, guesthouses, certified restaurants, and various tourism-related facilities. The goal is to substantially increase accommodation capacity while enhancing the overall quality of services offered to visitors.

Minister Tekaya emphasised that the commission will soon begin organising study days — structured consultation sessions that will bring together a wide range of stakeholders. These include representatives from public administrations, private investors, local community members, and other relevant actors. These sessions aim to foster collaboration and collective input in shaping a holistic development strategy. Particular attention will be paid to promoting El Kef’s cultural and historical heritage, as well as leveraging the region’s natural and human resources to stimulate long-term growth.

In his statement to Radio El Kef, Tekaya highlighted a growing interest from both domestic and international investors in launching tourism-related ventures in the El Kef governorate. This renewed enthusiasm is partly driven by the recent development of a tourist circuit in the area, which has created new opportunities for exploration and visitor engagement.

Additionally, the minister noted a positive trend among young people in the region, many of whom are keen to establish community-based enterprises focused on tourism services. These grassroots efforts are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability and inclusivity of the tourism sector in El Kef.
