Zambia’s closure of the Tunduma-Nakonde border with Tanzania in the
fight against Covid-19 will deal a heavy blow to the economies of four
countries viz  Tanzania, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo
(DRC) and – partly – Zimbabwe. Now these countries have resolved to
end the impasse to address the economic downturn they are facing on
account of the closure.

The Tunduma-Nakonde border connects Dar es Salaam with Lusaka
(Zambia), Lubumbashi (DRC) and partly Harare in Zimbabwe.  The cargo
is stranded at the border, including petroleum products that could
easily explode.  It is estimated that 70% of the goods in transit,
which are imported through Dar Es-Salaam are transported across
Tunduma –Nakonde border. The value of such cargo is estimated at US$
1.5 billion, which now has been disrupted because of the closure.
Zambia said that it would allow all cargoes to pass through after
conducting tests on drivers plying the trucks to detect whether they
are infected.
