US President Trump has tweeted that the government of Sudan has agreed to pay $335 MILLION to US terror victims and families and once that is done, the US government will remove Sudan from State Sponsors of Terrorism list. Once removed, Sudan would be allowed back into the global economic system including purchasing American products or dealing with US companies.

African leaders have been constantly lobbying and urging the US to lift sanctions to help the transitional government of Sudan to restore Sudanese economy. The Sanctions had crippled Sudan’s economy restricting it from participating in the global economy for the last 27 years. The news about the removal has been in the media for several months. There were speculations that the sanctions would be lifted after the US elections next month.

Some economic sanctions imposed on Sudan were lifted earlier, with respect to key officials and Sudanese firms involved in Darfur. However, the country remained a state sponsor of terrorism. Responding to Trump’s tweet, Sudanese Premier Abdalla Hamdok said the US move would be the strongest support to Sudan’s transition to democracy.
