The Nigerian government enforced an indefinite suspension of the micro-blogging platform’s operations in Nigeria. Millions of people were cut off from the micro-blogging platform.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria said they had to do so in compliance with a government directive.  The Nigeria government indefinitely suspended Twitter after the company deleted a controversial tweet President Muhammadu Buhari made about a secessionist movement. The government sources said that the platform was being used for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence. It also said that in the past also the Nigerian government ignored inciting tweets against the Nigerian government. The immediate provocation was that pro-Biafra separatists have alleged to have used the micro-blogging platform   for attacking police and government buildings.
