The recently published Africa Visa Openness Index (AVOI) report 2022 reveals that the travel policies across the continent has recorded improvement. The annual report is jointly prepared by the African Development Bank Group and the African Union Commission. The 7th edition was launched on December 11th at the 2022 African Economic Conference in Mauritius.
The report assessed the visa policies adopted by African governments on three main criteria: visa-free entry to citizens from other African countries, ease of getting visa on arrival, and whether travellers are required to obtain visas before traveling to other African countries.
According to the 2022 report, there is all-round improvement. Almost 50 countries have maintained or improved their Visa Openness Index score relative to 2021, 24 African countries offer an eVisa, and three countries—Benin, The Gambia and the Seychelles—offer visa-free entry to Africans of all other countries. Majority of African countries,48 countries out of 54, now offer visa-free travel to the nationals of at least one other African country. About 10 countries have improved their visa openness score over the past year. The visa openness on the continent is in line with the peak score achieved in 2020 before the Pandemic when travel was impacted with restrictions imposed.

Progressive visa policies are expected to ensure that the positive trend continues. Further, the use of technology and a better adoption of e-Visa systems, are expected to fast-track the ease at which travellers can cross borders.
