Transforming Trade: Dangote Unveils Plans for Nigeria’s Biggest Port

(3 Minutes Read)

Nigeria is set to develop its largest seaport, as announced by Aliko Dangote, the head of the Dangote Group. The new port will be situated at the Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ) in Ogun State, following a recent meeting between Dangote and the state’s governor.

He mentioned that they had previously halted plans for the Olokola project but are now revitalising their investment due to the governor’s favourable policies. Dangote stated, “We are back and will collaborate with the government on this initiative,” adding that plans are in progress to create the largest port in the country.

While he did not disclose specific details about the project’s size or timeline, he noted that work has resumed on a cement factory in Itori with a capacity of 6 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa), expected to be completed by late 2026. Additionally, the group operates a 12 mtpa cement plant in Ibeshe, which, together, will position Ogun as the leading cement-producing region in Africa with a total output of 18 mtpa. He emphasized that Ogun significantly outpaces other African countries in cement production when including contributions from other local producers.

If Dangote proceeds with these plans, it would add to Nigeria’s port infrastructure developments, following the recent construction of the Lekki deep sea port, which works in conjunction with the Lekki Freeport Terminal and Lagos Free Zone. The Lekki port recently celebrated the launch of Cosco, ONE, and ZIM alliance marine services with the arrival of the E A Centaurus vessel, which is the largest Cosco ship to dock in Nigeria, measuring 277 meters and capable of handling 7,000 TEU containers.
