There is excitement among traders in Togo as China is opening up its borders to foreigners. Two-thirds of the goods sold in Togo’s market come from China. The reopening of borders would take place effective from 8 January.
Traders in Togo said that during the time of closure of Chinese borders, traders ordered the goods through WhatsApp and they were not happy with the shipment received afterwards since there were goods of inferior quality. But among some sections of traders, there are apprehensions about the safety of the trip to China since they are not sure whether the country (China) had become completely free of Covid-19 pandemic based on the news reports appearing in various quarters. Also, they fear that there may be restrictions to follow and possibility of some hidden conditions like taxes.

Togo imported goods from China worth US$ 442 million in 2020, according to the World Bank. Travellers to China will have to provide a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours before boarding to enter the country. Current policy requires five days of quarantine at a centralized facility, followed by three days at home.
