Mtwara port is playing a key role in boosting the trade between Tanzania and Comoros. It is expected to grow several folds in the current year.
During the last fiscal year that ended in June 2022, the volume recorded was 15,760 tonnes while the port has already recorded 9,585 tons of cargo in the first half of the year (from July to December 2022//2023). According to Mtwara port Manager, James Ng’wandu, during 2021/2022, cement accounted for 97 percent of cargoes to Comoros. In the six months of this financial year, it has touched 86 percent. Cement tops the list of commodities from Tanzania to Comoros followed by juices, building materials and others.

The number of ships sailing to Comoros from Tanzania has also gone up. In 2022/23, 18 vessels carried cargo to Comoros. In the first of the current year, it has already crossed 17 vessels. Tanzania and Comoros are expected to sign several bilateral agreements to further promote bilateral trade.
