Since July 2020, Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada have received around 430,000 tourists, signaling gradual growth of the sector. This was revealed by Khaled Al-Anani, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities while addressing a week-long virtual meeting “Egypt’s Green Economy” programme, organised by the British Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) and the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce (EBCC). The minister further said that some tourists are coming directly to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Aswan. However, a major portion of the tourists are directly to Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada. Yet, the tourist flow is only 10% of what it was an year ago during the same period. The minister said that the government is doing its best to attract more tourists and added that there was no such negative feedback from tourists who are visiting now including from the foreign tourists. Egypt`s experience for resumption of tourism has received kudos from several quarters. Egypt’s In-bound tourism flights, after the ban, resumed only on 1 July to three governorates as part of a first stage, namely the Red Sea, South Sinai, and Matrouh governorates.
Tourism activities to Luxor and Aswan resumed in early September. Over 60% of the hotels in Egypt have received the health and safety certificate to reopen after fulfilling regulations outlined by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which is in accordance with standards put in place by Egypt’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) have awarded Egypt the Safe Travels stamp.
