In view of the continued Islamic insurgency, Togolese parliament has approved the extension of the state of emergency in Togo’s northern Savanes region for another six months. A three-month state of emergency was declared in the region in June this year after Islamist militants attacked an area near the border with Burkina Faso killing and causing military casualties. There were reports of further attacks and killings in July also. This was followed again by further attacks on Togolese defense and security forces in August.
In a statement issued, Damehame Yark, the Togolese security minister, remarked that the extension was necessary to maintain security and conduct military operations in the region.
Countries on the coast of West Africa have been targets of Islamist militants coming from the Sahel region. Benin, Ghana and Ivory Coast have faced regular militant attacks. Togo also has joined the list of the target countries by Islamist militants.
