Gabon and Togo are the latest nations to enter the Commonwealth group. The applications for membership of these two French-speaking West African states with no historic ties to Britain were accepted on the final day of its leadership summit in Rwanda. They are the first new members to join the Commonwealth since Rwanda in 2009.

Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey said membership is motivated by the desire to expand its diplomatic, political, and economic network. It is also hoped that the membership will deliver new export markets, funding for development projects and access to new educational and cultural resources. Gabonese President Ali Bongo regarded admission to Commonwealth as a historic step for his country.

Analysts feel that Francophone states are using the opportunity to enter the Commonwealth membership in recent years and move away from France. Rwanda also sought membership into the commonwealth at a time of immense strain between Rwanda and France.
