In a significant development, Tigrayan authorities accused Ethiopia’s federal government of carrying out a drone strike against civilians less than 48 hours after signing a deal to end two years of conflict. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) spokesperson said the target of the most recent attack was the city of Maychew. They also said that the drone attack was followed by artillery shelling, which killed and wounded many civilians.
Since communication channels are in disarray for more than one year, a few reports indicated that the claim of the TPLF could not be verified. The important agreement to end the war was signed only a few days ago at the South African capital Pretoria, wherein both parties agreed to a permanent cease-fire.

There are claims and counterclaims as to how the war started. TPLF claims that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent troops into Tigray on November 4, 2020, to topple the TPLF, the region’s ruling party. However, Ethiopian authorities assert that it was in response to TPLF’s attacks on federal army camps, as a move to secede from the country. Many have lost lives, thousands got injured and millions were dislocated on account of the bloody war, which continued for two years.
