President Biden will host the leaders of the African continent at the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, from December 13-15, 2022, except Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Sudan. According to the State Department website, the summit will demonstrate the United States’ enduring commitment to Africa and underscore the importance of the U.S.-Africa relationship and cooperation on shared global priorities, enabling Africa to address challenges and opportunities.
In an environment marked by competition from China and Russia, the three-day summit is expected to revitalise the US-Africa relationship, especially since the first such summit was held in 2014. It will provide an opportunity to discuss new investments, food security, climate change, governance and more.

The summit shows that Joe Biden is putting Africa at the centre of global diplomacy, supporting the idea of a seat for Africa on the UN Security Council. Among the leaders expected to attend are Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi and Tunisian President Kais Saied.
