The U.S. Consul General, Claire Pierangelo, has conveyed US support to Nigeria to strengthen health security and response to disease threats. The Consul General was speaking at the closing and graduation ceremony after a two-week capacity-building exercise on public health emergency management. The programme was jointly organised by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US-CDC), the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and Georgetown University.
The first intermediate-level Public Health Emergency Management Professional Certification Program (PHEM PC) adapted from the US-CDC was delivered by Georgetown University, a leader in Public Health Emergency Management training. About 40 participants from the NCDC, state-level ministries of health, Nigeria Port Health Services, and the Nigerian military participated in the Programme. The PHEM PC Program imparted specialized training to coordinate public health emergencies including emergency risk communication, public health emergency management functions, and operations. The training is part of the U.S. Government’s efforts to support pandemic preparedness in Nigeria.
Underlining the strategic partnership between the U.S. and Nigeria, the Consul General said that the US is committed to supporting the Public Health Emergency Management efforts of Nigeria. The West African country has been working towards achieving the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) 2024 targets and meeting the International Health Regulations (IHR) requirements.
