Rwanda is again getting ready to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) after the event was postponed twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The new schedule of the meeting will now be starting the week of June 20, 2022 as announced in a joint communiqué by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame.

CHOGM, a meeting primarily of the former colonies of Britain is customarily held every two years. Rwanda, which was a former French colony, joined the British Commonwealth in 2009. This will be the first CHOGM to be held in Africa for over a decade.

Initially CHOGM was planned to be held in Kigali in June 2020 and subsequently postponed for 2021. With the raging Pandemic, the 2021 event also got postponed. Many private sector players were negatively impacted by the Postponement of CHOGM for two consecutive years. Some of them who had won tenders to offer certain services had taken bank loans to increase their financial capacity to offer services to the delegates.

The long overdue meeting will offer a significant platform for member countries to come together to address the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and to build on innovative technological and economic opportunities to solve other key problems facing  citizens, remarked President Kagame in a statement. The Government of Rwanda has already undertaken several steps including improving road infrastructure and the construction of new access routes around the city in a bid to decongest the city and facilitate smooth transportation for the delegates.
