Africa’s tourism sector is showing strong signs of a rebound in the first half of the current year. The continent recorded almost 150 percent rise in international arrivals during the first five months of 2022 as compared to the same period last year.

The increase is keeping pace with the strong recovery of international tourism after the impact of the pandemic, amidst the mounting economic and geopolitical challenges. According to United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), World Tourism Barometer, the international tourism sector has recovered to 46 percent of pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Africa, with a growth of 156 percent during the period under review is about 50 percent below 2019 levels. UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili however, cautioned that the economic and geopolitical challenges could impact the sector in the remainder of 2022 and beyond.
