The transitional government in Libya has taken over administration giving a ray of hope to the citizens for living in peace and harmony. They will be ruling the North African country till December when the first democratic elections are due.

In Tripoli yesterday, Fayez Sarraj, head of the outgoing United Nations-supported administration in western Libya, transferred power to Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and Mohammad Younes Menfi, who chairs a three-member Presidential Council.  Earlier, Dbeibah and his Cabinet were sworn in the eastern town of Tobruk.

Lawmakers had already endorsed the interim government last week. The U.N.-brokered political process has received support from various nations. The oil rich Libya, according to the peace process roadmap, would hold the general elections by December 24. International community is appreciative of the smooth transfer of power to the Interim Government. There were reports that the warring groups had still unsettled their differences.

The peace process initiated in 2014 did not go well mainly because of lack of a proper handover mechanism for power  among legislators. This also created a split of Libya’s institutions. The immediate concern of the Interim government would be the presence of thousands of foreign forces and mercenaries in the country.  The U.N. Security Council last week called for countries with troops and mercenaries in Libya to withdraw them immediately.  There are over 20,000 foreign fighters in Libya, including Syrians, Turkish, Sudanese and Russians, who have been brought to the country by the rival sides.

In 2011 during the NATO-backed uprising the  longtime ruler of Libya Moammar Gadhafi’s government was toppled   and he was later killed. Before the UN brokered peace process, the country was split between rival east- and west-based administrations. Each group was backed by armed groups and foreign governments. The running of parallel governments had  caused innumerable difficulties to the common man torn between two warring groups.
