The Gambia, a tiny country in the West African region has been hailed as an example for its action plan to avert climate catastrophe by climate watchers.  Global experts have upheld Gambia, a country on the periphery of globalization, for its ethical approach and its endeavor for transformational change.

According to the climate Action Tracker, while bigger economies faltered in adopting measures as per the Paris Agreement, Gambia stood out as the only nation to have done so. This small country with a population of 2.5 million, heavily dependent on agriculture makes a very minor contribution to global carbon emissions. What is noteworthy is that the Gambia has clear a gamelan to do its fair share to fix the problem. These include changing the ways it cultivates rice and managing the livestock that accounts for 11% of its emissions.

The contribution of a tiny country like the Gambia is conspicuous when the world’s wealthy countries fail to make concrete changes in their strategy, while countries like the Gambia suffer from apathy and inaction according to a recent report. Despite its minuscule carbon footprint, the country suffered from the impacts of global climate change. Gambia River has been choked on the saltwater that now flows in the opposite direction due to sea-level rise. The lack of rain has led to crop failure and water scarcity. The local fish stocks have also been wiped out affecting its export of seafood. In the case of wealthy countries, in spite of raging wildfires and rivers swelling under abnormal rainfall, have not spurred climate action to keep on track their original climate pledges.
