The G7 Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the USA and the High Representative of the EU have called for “the end of violence” in Tigray. In a statement issued, they have jointly urged for an early establishment of a transparent political process acceptable to all Ethiopians, including those in Tigray that can lead to fair elections and a wider national reconciliation process.
The statement also put on record the concern of the G7 about reports on human rights violations and abuses, and violations of international humanitarian law in Tigray and called for unhindered humanitarian access. Welcoming the recent announcement from Prime Minister Abiy that Eritrean forces will withdraw from Tigray it urged for a swift, unconditional and verifiable process. Eritrean forces who are taking part in the civil war in Tigray have been accused of committing atrocities. BBC and CNN had released two reports which pointed out to the involvement of members of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces in a massacre of a group of young men in Mahibere Dego, in central Tigray.
