The 35th summit of the African Union took place amidst growing threats of military coups and attempted uprisings, as in the recent case of Guinea Bissau. During the last 18 months, AU’s Security and Peace Council has suspended four member countries from the organisation for usurping power through unconstitutional means.
The Summit concluded in Addis Ababa after a two day session. The escalating insecurity in the continent, health crisis as well as Israel’s status within the organisation dominated the discussions. The meeting explored possible solutions to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, development, climate change and governance. The meeting also explored new legal mechanisms and issues to strengthen peace and security in the continent.
The head of the African Union Commission, Mohamed Moussa Faki, called for a new approach to address the structure of peace and security in the Union and the new factors destabilising Africa. Faki underlined the continent’s freedom to resolve its own disputes without foreign aid to solve these problems. To carry out this mission successfully, Africa has to develop greatest financial independence, he remarked.
