The 2021 AGRF Summit is scheduled to take place from 7th to 10th September 2021 in Nairobi, hosted by the Government of Kenya.The central theme of this year’s AGRF Summit, is “Pathways to recovery and resilient food systems”. The Summit is expected to provide inputs to the UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) by way of identifying immediate actions and steps necessary to accelerate progress and recovery towards inclusive agricultural transformation. The Summit also proposes to to chart a recovery plan for Africa’s food system from the Covid pandemic disruption as well as build resilience to future shocks.
Jennifer Baarn, the Head of Partnerships at the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) observed that since 2014 till now, Africa suffered a loss of $372 billion due to droughts. The worst locust outbreak in Ethiopia and Somalia during 2019/20 led to a destruction of 356,000MT of cereals and almost 1.5 million hectares of crop and pasture in Ethiopia. The AGRF 2021 Summit will provide a platform for all stakeholders to assess the actions and commitments necessary to build a resilient food systems to end hunger and support delivery of Sustainable Development Goals.
The eminent speakers include H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta – President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Hailemariam Dessalegn – Former Prime Minister of Ethiopia & Chair of AGRF Partners Dr. Agnes Kalibata – President, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) Dr. Gilbert Houngbo – President, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Mr. William Asiko – Managing Director, Rockefeller Foundation’s Africa Region Office among others. The AGRF is made up of 26 leading countries in African agriculture focussing on promoting agriculture to achieve economic growth.
