Telecom Namibia has announced that all newly deployed mobile base stations are fully 5G-enabled, marking a major step forward in its ongoing efforts to modernise its network and improve access to high-speed connectivity across the country.

The announcement was made during a high-level visit to the company’s Windhoek headquarters by a delegation from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), led by Executive Director Dr Audrin Mathe. The team was received by Telecom Namibia CEO Dr Stanley Shanapinda and members of his executive leadership.

Dr Shanapinda emphasised that the integration of 5G infrastructure is central to Telecom Namibia’s strategy to align with global technological advancements.“Our discussions today have laid the groundwork for deeper collaboration, with the shared goal of empowering every Namibian through advanced ICT solutions,” he stated.

The visit follows the Namibian Cabinet’s 2022 approval of 5G technology deployment, which promises faster data speeds, improved reliability, and expanded network capacity. The meeting also addressed key national ICT priorities, including the rollout of critical infrastructure such as the OSS/BSS billing system, Fixed Mobile Core, Fibre-To-The-X (FTTX), and the Radio Access Network (RAN). Cybersecurity was a major focus, with both parties underscoring the urgent need to strengthen data protection and build resilient systems to combat rising cyber threats.

Additionally, discussions included the potential introduction of a national entry-level broadband benchmark of 25 Mbps for both download and upload speeds, which Dr Mathe described as essential for ensuring inclusive access to reliable internet services as Namibia deepens its involvement in the digital economy.

As part of the visit, the MICT delegation toured Telecom Namibia’s data centre and billing server room to gain insights into the backbone infrastructure powering digital services. The engagement is part of a broader strategy to enhance public-private partnerships in the ICT sector and support the government’s digital transformation agenda.
